Are there any rules about leaving a casino poker table?

March 11, 2010, Posted by admin at 10:05 pm

Can I just get up and leave after winning a couple of big hands, or do I have to announce that I’ll be leaving in 10 minutes or after the next 3 hands?
Thanks.

At a ring game in just about any casino, you can get up and leave the table anytime you want. You do not have to give notice or provide a reason. If you win a couple big hands and want to leave, simply stand up, maybe say something like “Thanks, it was a pleasure playing with you”, take your chips and go.

You may want to consider your position and the rake though, if you are playing Texas Holdem. If you are on the button, you can see several more hands at no cost, or minimal cost if there is an ante. And if there is a rake based on hourly play, (or half hours at some casinos) and you just paid the rake, you may want to consider sticking around a bit, especially if you are behind the blinds.

    Good luck!

If you’re leaving for good, no. If you are leaving for a bit (for a restroom break or such), tell the dealer and they will keep an eye on your chips. (You may collect a ‘Missed blind’ chip you will have to pay for if you’re gone long enough – you can’t run to the bathroom every time the blinds come around to avoid paying them.) Some casinos will allow you to leave your chips (under the watch of the dealer) and hold your seat for a prolonged dinner break (tho seldom longer than an hour) – in this case you are not responsible for any missed blinds.

Obviously in a tournament, you can’t do that, since a tournament is played until you win or lose all your chips.

But assuming you are talking about cash games, you can leave any time.

However, if you make a habit of that kind of smash and grab play, there is a very good chance people will avoid playing with you. Or they may simply develop a really strong dislike for you that leads them to go out of their way to bust you.

Frankly, I’m not sure the benefits of what you suggest outweigh the down side.

No there is no rule, Although it is not generally good form to hit and run. people will remember you.

You can leave whenever you want.

While there are no rules against leaving whenever you want, there is a code of etiquette that should be followed.

    1. Do not sit down for 10 minutes, win 2-3 big pots, and then leave the table.

    2. Do not wait until your about to be the Big Blind and then say you are going to leave now because you don’t want to post it. Try to leave 1-2 hands before it gets to you.

Other than that, have fun at the tables and leave when you are ready. Don’t let anyone guilt you into staying longer than you want just because you won a lot of money from them and they want to win it back.

Edit : One more thing to add. When you leave for dinner breaks be sure to tell the dealer and let him know you are taking your high denomination chips and cash off the table with you. There have been instances where people’s money has been gone when they returned and the Casino really doesn’t care since it doesn’t cost them anything and they claim no responsibility.

You can leave whenever you want. You do not have to announce it. All you have to do is grab a chip rack, gather your chips and go.
